Picture Book Illustration: Paint Your Children’s Book

Location: Paul Bunyan Center
Create eye-catching illustrations for picture books by using a system of creativity that develops illustrations that are harmonious with the concepts and direction of your book. In this course, learn time-tested techniques and processes for dreaming up, sketching, drawing, and coloring picture book illustrations. Nicholas teaches how to design an imaginary character based upon the ideas from a story, and how to take a reader through a visual journey of wonder and imagination.
Please note: This course is not a writing course for your book. Rather, this course prepares you to create illustrations for a book you have written or written by another author.
You may choose to either use traditional mediums or bring a tablet with stylus (iPad + Apple Pencil). If you choose to go the traditional route, please visit the website or call Community Ed for the supplies list. .

In this course, learn how to create illustrations from scratch in Procreate app. Nicholas guides you through his creative process step by step, from the initial concept to the final artwork. Learn to use the tools and unique techniques of digital painting to bring your stories to life.

Live Online Workshop
Mixed Media Painting
November 20th, 2022 from 2-5 pm. CST
Location: Online via Google Meet
Using multiple mediums in a painting allows you to get the very best from each medium and then skip what doesn’t work well. We will be covering colored pencils, watercolor, gouache, acrylics, and oils. In this approach we can go back and forth between mediums, floating between drawing, painting, and back again. Finally, we will end with oil paints. It is not necessary to have all listed mediums to attend this class.

Digital Painting 101: Getting Started
Dec 11th, 2022 from 3pm – 6pm. CST

For over 15 years I have been painting digitally and now I get the opportunity to share that knowledge with you. Together in this class, we will create a painting step-by-step learning about how to structure a digital painting, sketch to the final painting, use layers and layer types, and brushes. Sometimes it can be hard to translate what you know about traditional painting to a computer or tablet. I will be answering questions, providing critiques, and walking through the creative process.

Meet Your Teacher
Nicholas Jackson is a fantasy illustrator and painter. He aims to tell fantastical stories that spark imagination and fascination.
Born and raised in Minnesota, Nicholas has been creating their art for over 15 years. He decided it was time to bring these stories to the world to help bring sparks of imagination to anyone who sees his art.
Nicholas’ message is to tell stories and chase art.
His art is created to make you look at the world around you a see that there is magic in everyday things and people. Inspiration is something that we call all get only if we stop to look and listen.
His artwork on your wall is created to help you remember that.
